About
"Da" is an online project about Eastern European Jewry.
There is a word in Hebrew - דע [da] - it is the imperative inclination of the verb “to know, to recognize”. The authors of "Da" - historians, philologists, art historians, and researchers - create materials in which they rediscover Eastern European Jewry as it really was in the past and as it has become today.
Our goal is to speak honestly and openly about this part of the Jewish world. The Jewish culture of Eastern Europe has already transcended geographical boundaries and broken down language barriers. It is a large and beautiful world that continues to develop in the former Soviet Union, Europe, Israel, the United States, and Latin America.
Our materials are constantly being updated. And their formats are becoming more diverse: from cards to podcasts, from videos to interactive maps and gamification.
The project is initiated by the Nadav Foundation, whose mission is to develop a sense of personal and collective identity, promote pluralism and liberal values, and strengthen the Jewish people.
The image of project "Da" appeared in 2021, but its beginning was in 2011 when Nadav Foundation started the unique project - "Ya-Tora" - translation and voice-over of classical texts of the Tanakh to the modern Russian language. In this project was born an idea that the historical and cultural heritage should sound modern, without losing its depth and versatility. For 10 years a lot of materials about Jewish tradition, archeological findings, comments and researches on Jewish history and tradition were collected on the project website. Materials of the "Ya-Torah" site were included in the new project as special projects "Tanakh translation" and "Torah on a map".
